Pactiv Evergreen, a manufacturer of fresh food and beverage packaging based in Lake Forest, Illinois, has partnered with Americas Styrenics (AmSty), a Houston-based manufacturer and recycler of polystyrene (PS), to offer customers foam polystyrene packaging products that include AmSty’s postconsumer recycled content.
“Pactiv Evergreen produces thousands of products in more than a dozen materials that protect, package and display fresh food and beverages,” says Eric Wulf, president of Pactiv Evergreen’s food merchandising business unit. “Our broad material expertise enables us to support our customers quickly and effectively as they seek more sustainable products. Our collaboration with AmSty expands our portfolio of circular packaging, and we’re pleased to offer this solution to our customers.”
According to a news release from Pactiv Evergreen, the recycled content will be derived from AmSty’s advanced recycling technologies. The company says AmSty’s recycled PS is International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus certified. ISCC Plus is an internationally recognized certification process for circular content.
“We are excited to collaborate with Pactiv Evergreen. … With our postconsumer polystyrene recycling process now certified by ISCC, we can introduce and scale up polystyrene circularity in a meaningful way,” says Tim Barnette, vice president of polymers and sustainability at AmSty.
Pactiv Evergreen says it will begin offering customers the ability to purchase packaging linked to ISCC Plus-certified postconsumer recycled PS derived from advanced recycling technologies in the first half of the year.
