The European Commission has approved Amcor for its proposed acquisition of Alcan Packaging’s European business from Rio Tinto Plc.
As a condition of the approval Amcor has agreed to divest its Tobepal operation comprising two Spanish plants that produce packaging for the pharmaceutical, personal care and food industries.
The transaction remains subject to regulatory approval in the United States and consultation with the European Works Council.
“Receiving approval from the European Commission is an important step toward closing the Alcan Packaging acquisition,” said Ken MacKenzie, Amcor’s managing director and CEO. The two plants to be divested represent less than 5 percent of the combined sales in Europe and will not have a material effect on the synergies or operational improvements anticipated.”
