Alon USA and Wright Asphalt have formed an alliance to manufacture tire rubber modified asphalt from recycled tires and sell the product in West Texas and New Mexico.
Under the agreement, Dallas-based Alon USA will use Wright Asphalt's technology to produce rubber asphalt at a $7.5 million plant, under construction at Alon's refinery in Big Spring. Channelview-based Wright Asphalt will market the product to contractors.
Tire rubber modified asphalt provides a durable surface for roads, runways, playgrounds, running tracks and other paved surfaces. The product can increase the service life of a paved road by four to five years compared with other asphalt products, according to Wright Asphalt.
Construction began in March and is scheduled to end by July 5. Production is set to begin July 31.
The asphalt plant will operate with the current staff of Alon's Big Spring refinery, which produces the FINA brand of gasoline.
