Alcoa Inc. said it will reduce production at three aluminum smelters and cut some jobs as part of a cost-reduction program unveiled earlier this year.
The company said the reductions will affect facilities in Rockdale, Texas; Massena, New York; and Ferndale, Washington.
Alcoa is restructuring its business as oversupply and slowing demand in the aerospace and energy industries have hurt aluminum prices.
Alcoa said it would trim the work force at the Texas facility by 150, or 11 percent of staff.
In New York, the company will reduce production at two different smelters by 60,000 metric tons a year, or 24 percent of the facilities' combined capacity of 255,000 tons.
In Ferndale, Washington, Alcoa will temporarily curtail production on September 30 if a planned electricity price increase goes through.
The price increase will force Ferndale to suspend 170,000 metric tons of production a year and lay off the 700 employees at the plant.Latest from Recycling Today
