Alcan Aluminum Corp.announced that it set a new record last year, recycling close to 24 billion used beverage cans.
According to Stephen Bettcher, Alcan’s president of Global Can, “The number of cans we recycled increased 10 percent from 1999, and is consistent with a steady increase for the past 10 years. Alcan's commitment to recycling, and thus energy and environmental conservation, continues to grow unabated."
Together, Alcan's three can recycling operations in the United States - Berea, Ky., Oswego, N.Y., and Greensboro, Ga. -- recycle 40 percent of the 62.6 billion UBCs annually recycled in the U.S. Last year the company’s Berea facility, the world’s largest UBC recycling plant, increased production by 13 percent.
