Alcan Forming Chinese Joint Venture

Aluminum giant inks a deal to increase its business operations in China.

Alcan, headquartered in Montreal, Quebec, reached an agreement in principle to create a joint venture with Qingtongxia Aluminum Co., a Chinese concern, to own and operate an aluminum smelter in China, and to more than double the smelter’s capacity.

Under the proposed joint venture, Alcan would buy a 50 percent ownership in the 130,000-ton smelter from the Qingtongxia Aluminum Co. In addition, Alcan has an option to secure a 50 percent interest in the planned and approved 150,000-ton expansion of the smelter.
