Alcan Inc. announced that it set a new recycling record -- recycling 24 billion used beverage cans last year -- an increase of 2 billion aluminum cans from the prior year. Alcan, the world's largest recycler of used beverage cans, recycled 45 percent of all UBCs collected in North America.
"Aluminum is a valuable metal that should not be buried in landfills because it is infinitely recyclable," stated Martha Finn Brooks, president of Alcan Rolled Products Americas and Asia. "As a leader in recycling, we are committed to educating the consumer and public officials about the economic value and environmental benefits of aluminum recycling. We've got to influence people's behavior and make it as automatic to recycle an aluminum can as it is to fasten your seat belt when you get in your car."
Alcan operates aluminum can recycling plants in Berea, Ky.; Oswego, N.Y.; and Greensboro, Ga. The Alcan Berea recycling facility is the world's largest devoted exclusively to recycling UBCs.Latest from Recycling Today
