The province of Alberta has launched its Call2Recycle program aimed at enhancing and expanding battery recycling efforts.

Five months after joining the national Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program, more than 2,000 drop-off sites are accessible to residents across the province. The sites accept household single-use and rechargeable batteries under 11 pounds (5 kilograms).

The organization also has introduced a new proactive pickup service along the Calgary-Edmonton corridor and smart collection containers. These containers, the first of their kind in North America according to Call2Recycle Canada, use advanced technology, creating a system that submits alerts when the bins are nearing capacity or are experiencing increases in temperature.

In addition, Call2Recycle is launching proactive pickups throughout its collection network, with program data including route and timing information, as well as fill-level signals. These pickups will aid collections along the Calgary-Edmonton corridor, with plans to expand in the future, Call2Recycle Canada says.

"Alberta's launch has been a resounding success, and we're committed to building on it," says Joe Zenobio, president and CEO at Call2Recycle Canada. "We're bringing a best-in-class program to Albertans to support the province's waste diversion goals by expanding a safe, robust collection network and educating Albertans on proper battery recycling. We're proud to lead the country, and we're just getting started.”

"This proactive approach makes participation in our leading Recycle Your Batteries, Canada! program even easier for municipalities, retailers and businesses," says Joseph Chung, vice president, account management at Call2Recycle Canada. "We're focused on continuous improvement so Albertans can recycle batteries safely and conveniently every day."

Drop-off and collection partners also receive educational and safety support from the province and program, including scheduled service.
