The Brick and other electronics and computer retailers in Alberta, Canada, are being supplies with recycling bins strictly designated for computer and electronic scrap by the Electronic Recycling Association of Alberta (ERA), a non-profit private group.
This new program is offered to the electronics retail industry in order to comply with all applicable laws and to prevent any environmental outbreaks, as well as to reduce fees on current garbage disposal.
The Brick stores in Alberta, Memory Express in Calgary, Interspots in Edmonton and many other retail outlets in the province are having success with the program.
All collected equipment is sorted at Calgary’s Computer Depot and then used in various programs, some of which include donations to local charitable organizations and community institutions, as well as to daycares and to elderly homes.
Other equipment is sent to specialist recyclers to either reuse or to completely recycle all components, recovering small amounts of precious metals found on some circuit boards.
A complete list of drop-off points is available at the ERA Web site, with additional depots scheduled to be added.
