Albany, New York, upgrades recycling

Pilot program employs new collection trucks and containers for residents.

The Albany (New York) Times Union reports the Albany Department of General Services began a new recycling pilot program Monday, Aug. 1, 2016.

The program includes the operation of advanced, automated recycling trucks equipped with a mechanical arm to lift and empty 64-gallon recycling carts at approximately 2,000 homes throughout the city, the article says.

According to the city, the larger carts will allow more material to be diverted from landfills, while the streamlined process will promote worker safety and reduce overtime and fuel costs.
