To increase recycling in the state, the Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) has awarded more than $1.7 million in grants to municipalities. The money is to be used to enhance existing recycling programs or help local municipalities start a program.
Grant money is made available through the Solid Wastes & Recyclable Materials Management Act, which was passed by the Alabama Legislature and signed into law in 2008. The legislation imposes a $1 per ton fee on all solid waste disposed of in the state’s landfills.
A portion of the proceeds allowed for the creation of the Alabama Recycling Fund (ARF), which provides the foundation for the awarding of grant funds on an annual basis.
