County officials in Limestone County, Ala., have announced plans to consider starting a construction and demolition debris landfill in the county, according to a report in the Decatur Daily (Decatur, Ala.).
Currently, the nearest C&D landfill is in neighboring Lawrence County. The Limestone County Commission, Solid Waste Authority and Athens, Ala., City Council are discussing where opening a C&D landfill within Limestone County would be a cheaper disposal option.
The county Solid Waste Authority has a contract with Allied Waste Services, which currently operates a transfer station in the western part of Limestone County. Allied would work with the county on an agreement to operate the proposed C&D landfill, according to the report.
