The state of Alabama has awarded a grant through its Community Development Block Grant fund to upgrade and improve a rail line that will be used by Steel Dust Recycling.
The grant, for $300,000, will allow the company to connect its plant new Millport, Ala., with a main rail line.
The cost to build the plant is expected to be around $35 million. When complete it will be capable of reclaiming zinc and other metals from steel particles. Steel Dust is expected to process more than 110,000 tons of steel dust a year.
In addition to the CDBG funds, local funding totaling $200,000, as well as additional grants will help build the projecdt.
The CDBG project was awarded from funds made available to the state through a program of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs is administering the grant.
