Airport Keeps its Eye on Recycling

Port Columbus International Airport in Columbus, Ohio, is expecting to recycle some 200 tons of material in 2002 thanks to a program being set up in cooperation with the Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO).

“With more than 13 million people passing through our doors annually, Port Columbus is pleased to be part of a waste reduction effort that can have such a positive impact on the community,” says Elaine Roberts, the airport’s executive director.

The plan initially targets cardboard, newspaper, magazines, mixed office paper and empty beverage containers for recycling. Port Columbus generates approximately one million tons of these materials daily.

“This program at Port Columbus fits perfectly into our strategy to introduce recycling at high-traffic areas in Franklin County,” says SWACO executive director Michael Long. “Our ultimate goal is to reduce the amount of waste that goes into the landfill by increasing the percentage of material that is diverted from the waste stream to 25 percent,” he adds.

In addition from collecting material in terminals, airport employees, tenants and airlines doing business at Port Columbus will have access to desk-side and office station recycling containers.
