Containerboard production decreased 1 percent in the United States in January 2019 compared with January of the year before, according to the Washington-based American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA).
The month-over-month average daily production in January compared with December 2018 was 3.5 percent lower, while the containerboard mill operating rate was 93.1 percent, 1.8 percentage points lower than the same month in 2018.
Production of containerboard for export was 16.6 percent lower than January 2018, dropping below 400,000 short tons for the first time since June 2017, says AF&PA.
The news was better in the boxboard market, with total boxboard monthly production in the U.S. increasing 4.1 percent compared with January 2018. The total boxboard mill operating rate was 96.8 percent for January.
Recycled-content boxboard production has risen 2.1 percent year to date, according to the AF&PA
