AERC Recycling Solutions, based in Flanders, N.J. has announced that its Com-Cycle electronics processing facility in West Melbourne, Fla., has attained R2/RIOS Certification. The Florida facility is the first Com-Cycle location to acquire R2/RIOS Certification, according to the company.
The company reports that its AERC/Com-Cycle West Melbourne is the eighth facility in the United States to obtain the Certified Electronics Recycler credential from the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI).
Perry Johnson Registrars Inc. (PJR Associates), an accredited certification body for R2/RIOS, audited the facility. AERC says it is committed to obtaining R2/RIOS Certification for its other Com-Cycle facilities, located in Hayward, Calif.; Houston; Ashland, Va.; and Allentown, Pa., by 2011.
“ISRI is excited to see the growing number of electronics recyclers who are recognizing and embracing the positive role that ISRI’s Certified Electronics Recycler program offers the electronics recycling community. AERC Recycling Solutions/Com-Cycle is to be complimented for its dedication to professionalism and operating responsibly through its successful certification as a Certified Electronics Recycler,” says Robin Wiener, ISRI president.
RIOS (Recycling Industry Operating Standard), the recycling industry’s quality, environmental and health and safety management system standard, is administered by ISRI Services Corp. (ISC). The development of the R2 (Responsible Recycler) Practices was facilitated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and are supported by ISC. R2 outlines specific guidelines for recyclers who dismantle and refurbish end-of-life electronics. Together, these industry standards make up ISRI’s R2/RIOS Certified Electronics Recycler Program.
“The standards defined in the R2 and RIOS certification programs are a much-needed first step in the electronics recycling industry,” says Robert Landmesser, founder and chairman of AERC. “As AERC Recycling Solutions celebrates 20 years of environmental service in 2010, I am very pleased to see AERC distinguished as one of the first electronics recycling companies that is a Certified Electronics Recycler.”
In addition to electronics recycling, AERC manages universal waste, including lamps, batteries, ballasts and mercury-containing devices. AERC Allentown is one of only five mercury retort operations in the United States.
