Advanced Disposal Services Inc. (ADS), based in Jacksonville, Fla., has acquired Sumrall Recycling, a Mississippi-based recycling firm. The acquisition took place Dec. 31, 2009.
The acquisition includes material recovery facilities (MRFs) in Sumrall and Flowood, Miss., and in Summerdale, Ala., as well as a MRF operating contract in Franklin, Tenn. Sumrall bills itself as the largest multi-material recycling firm in Mississippi. The company handles most grades of recovered fiber, many grades of plastic and ferrous and nonferrous metals. Sumrall also offers product and document destruction services throughout its coverage area.
Eric James, owner of Sumrall Recycling, will remain with the company and become vice president of ADS’s recycling division.
“We look to expand the size of the facility,” he says. “I think it will add a lot of jobs.”
Sumrall Recycling operates recycling programs throughout nine Southeastern states.
Mary O’Brien, chief marketing officer for ADS, says the company, one of the largest privately owned waste management firms in the country, has always been involved in the collection of recyclables. ADS has agreements with companies such as Smurfit-Stone to process recyclables in Florida.
