The Global Steel Climate Council (GSCC) has appointed Adina Renee Adler as executive director. The GSCC refers to Adler, a former staff member with the Washington-based Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), as “a seasoned advocate for competitive, low-carbon manufacturing and the circular economy.”

The U.S.-based GSCC is a nonprofit organization leading an effort to reduce steel carbon emissions and encourage investments in lower-carbon emission technology as part of a global effort to decarbonize economies and societies. Its membership includes steel manufacturers, associations and other organizations in the steel supply chain with a presence in 79 countries.

“The low-carbon steel industry provides the building blocks for green manufacturing,” Adler says. “I am honored to lead the GSCC and work closely with the GSCC board, the members and partners to accelerate the industry’s greenhouse gas reductions to achieving a 1.5 degree Celsius scenario by 2050.”

Adler previously served as deputy executive director at the Washington-based Silverado Policy Accelerator and as vice president of advocacy at ISRI, which is a GSCC founding member. Her prior roles include 10 years as a trade negotiator and advocate in the U.S. government and stings in international advocacy for aluminum producer Alcoa and for Shell Oil Co.

“We are fortunate to have Adina serve as GSCC executive director at a critical time in our industry’s decarbonization journey,” says Gregory Murphy, GSCC board chair and executive vice president with steelmaker Nucor. “She is well respected in the international policy community and brings valuable experience, energy and policy ingenuity to our growing coalition.”

On the policy front, two different acts have been introduced in the U.S. Congress regarding methods of placing a carbon tax on imported steel, with one of the two also seeking a carbon tax on domestic steel.

In her role at the GSCC, Adler will collaborate with GSCC members, policymakers and stakeholders to position the GSCC as an advocate of “firm glide paths for science-based, verified GHG reduction targets.” Her priorities will include growing GSCC membership of steel companies “committed to decarbonization and maintain[ing] the Steel Climate Standard’s alignment with the Paris Climate Agreement and International Energy Agency targets for steel industry decarbonization,” the GSCC says.
