Accident at Gerdau Ameristeel Mill Claims One Life

An outside contactor dies in accident at Gerdau Amiersteel’s Charlotte, N.C., mill.

Gerdau Ameristeel has confirmed that an accident at this mill in Charlotte, N.C. on Dec. 16 led to the death of an external contractor. The contractor was in the process of reassembling a furnace that was being serviced.

 

Gerdau Ameristeel is cooperating fully with public safety and regulatory authorities as they investigate the cause of the accident. The mill is currently not operating as part of its annual maintenance shutdown and is scheduled to resume operations on Jan. 5, 2009.

 

 The Charlotte mill opened in 1961 and covers 120 acres. It produces long steel products, principally merchant bars and rebar.
