Abitibi-Consolidated, one of the largest newsprint producer in the world, reported first quarter net income of $51 million, compared to $368 million the same time last year. The company attributed the steep drop to lower prices in all pulp and paper grades, as well as significant downtime at its newsprint mills, which reduced production by around 227,000 metric tons during the quarter.
