Abitibi-Consolidated announced that it is indefinitely idling its Sheldon, Tex., recycled newsprint mill. The decision will remove 472,000 metric tons of newsprint capacity.
The newsprint mill, a three-machine operation, will be closed on Dec. 23. The company attributed the decision to a slow pace of recovery in North American newsprint demand. One of the three machines has been idled since October 2001.
The company also announced that it expects to begin production at its currently idled newsprint machine in Lufkin, Tex., during the first quarter of next year.
The Sheldon newsprint mill takes in old newspaper from throughout the Texas area. The mill had developed a number of collection programs, through its Paper Retriever program, to help feed the mill.
