The Sorg Paper Co. mill in Middletown, Ohio, will be shut May 15 because it’s been losing about $750,000 a month and Wausau- Mosinee wasn’t able to find a buyer, the company said. The plant makes decorative laminate paper for kitchen countertops and paper for vacuum-cleaner filters.
The company's Bay West Paper unit, also in Middletown, won’t be affected by the Sorg closure, the company said. Wausau-Mosinee has 3,400 employees.
"Sorg’s machines and cost structure didn’t allow it to be competitive," said Gary Peterson, Wausau-Mosinee’s chief financial officer. "We can’t sell the products at a price that’s high enough to make a profit." He said the company will try to find jobs at its other mills for Sorg workers.
