The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), Silver Spring, Maryland, has announced its support of the National Waste & Recycling Association’s (NWRA) Safety Stand Down on vehicle backing, Jan. 25-29, 2016.
The 2016 NWRA Safety Stand Down launches Jan. 25 with a weeklong training and awareness initiative focused on reducing accidents, fatalities and injuries related to truck backing incidents. The effort will include a daily focus on safety issues related to backing and will conclude Jan. 29, 2016.
These types of incidents represent a common challenge for the waste industry, according to SWANA. A toolkit of materials that local governments and waste haulers can use to participate in this effort is available on the association’s recently launched safety page at www.SWANA.org/safety.
SWANA says its focus on safety in the waste industry, in both the United States and Canada, has become a top priority for the association. In recent months, SWANA has built a robust and growing safety program that includes several new initiatives, such as the recently launched Chapter Safety Ambassadors and safety seminars. The association says it discussed the Safety Stand Down on backing at its inaugural 2016 safety seminar the week of Jan. 18.
SWANA Executive Director David Biderman says, “Backing incidents comprise about 25 percent of all accidents and injuries in the waste industry, and it is important to focus on backing, both during the safety stand down and throughout the year.”
Biderman adds, “SWANA has developed important new resources highlighting best practices for backing, which are available on SWANA’s website.”
SWANA encourages its members to participate in the weeklong Safety Stand Down.
SWANA is an organization of more than 8,300 public and private sector professionals committed to advancing from solid waste management to resource management through their shared emphasis on education, advocacy and research. For more than 50 years, SWANA says it has been the leading association in the solid waste management field. SWANA serves industry professionals through technical conferences, certifications, publications and a large offering of technical training courses.
