A recent study commissioned by Cintas Corp., headquartered in Cincinnati, and conducted by Harris Interactive reveals that two-thirds of U.S. adults would not return to a business if it compromised their personal information. In addition to compromising current client relationships, data breaches also affect an organization’s reputation, which could hinder prospective clients from doing business with the organization, whether it be a bank, insurance agency, doctor or hospital or charity. Data protection, therefore, extends beyond securing customers’ personal information; it also safeguards the growth potential of a business or an organization. As records and information management (RIM) service providers, you are positioned to help your clients recognize their data protection responsibilities. Take Titan Mobile Shredding, the Pipersville, Pa.-based company that is the subject of this issue’s cover story, “Thriving Titan,” on page 16. Don Adriaansen, who co-owns Titan with Bob Leventhal, says he has taken advantage of the Compliance Toolkit offered by the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) to educate Titan’s clients on their data protection responsibilities. Adriaansen originally provides training to Titan’s clients using the toolkit. He then leaves them with the resources they need to train new employees or to provide follow-up training. Adriaansen also has maintained his CSDS (Certified Secure Destruction Specialist) accreditation in an effort to further distinguish his company in the eastern Pennsylvania market, he says. “We have positioned ourselves as the information destruction experts, and we do all we can to maintain that position,” Adriaansen adds. As RIM industry professionals, it is in your best interest to help companies and organizations recognize their data protection responsibilities. In addition to assisting in training their personnel so that they fully understand the ramifications of data breaches, you can innumerate the benefits of outsourcing RIM management. Your two primary trade associations, NAID and PRISM International, have resources to help you undertake such an effort. |
