Recall Total Information Management Inc., based in Norcross, Ga., has acquired the U.S.-based document storage business operating under the Securit name from Shred-it International Inc., based in Toronto. Shred-it will continue to own and operate its records management business in Canada.
Under the deal, completed March 1, 2011, Recall has purchased client records and customers from Securit at its facilities in Dallas, Chicago and Birmingham, Ala. The deal does not include the physical buildings, which Shred-it will continue to own.
The racking from the three facilities will be transferred to Shred-it’s Canadian records management business, says Shawn Lanthier, vice president, strategy and corporate development, Shred-it. He says Shred-it will continue to own, operate and grow its record management business in Canada, which continues to perform well. Shred-it presently has nine storage facilities in Canada.
Lanthier adds, “While the document storage operation continues to perform well in other markets, the U.S.-based records management business has not achieved the scale required to operate efficiently, and we have therefore decided to divest our U.S. records management business, redirecting our resources and capital to our core document destruction business and Canadian records management business.”
Shred-it has increased the pace of its acquisitions. In the past six months, the company has acquired five document destruction companies, Lanthier says.
While the three U.S. Securit sites offered records management and destruction services, Lanthier says, “There will be no disruption to Shred-it’s U.S. document destruction customers as a result of this transaction.”

Michele Blackstone, global senior manager, public relations, for Recall North America, says the acquisition will improve Recall’s density coverage in the three markets. The company will relocate the acquired customers and inventory to its document storage facilities near each of the acquired locations.
“This acquisition supports our growth strategy and will expand our footprint in Recall’s largest region,” says Mark Wesley, Recall North America president. “Recall makes significant investments every year to improve our operations, enhance security and safety and develop new services to meet our customers’ changing needs. We believe our newly acquired customers will benefit from these investments as well as [from] our experience as a global leader in this industry.”
He continues, “This is a strategic opportunity for Recall, as these three markets are attractive, and the acquisition will allow us to leverage existing infrastructure to better serve and expand our customer base. The cultures of Recall and Shred-it have a similar focus on customer service and support, and together we have jointly communicated the change in ownership to these customers.”
Recall operates about 300 operation centers in more than 20 countries, including more than 150 facilities in North America. The company is owned by Australia-based Brambles Ltd.
