Wise Signs Mulit-Location Agreement

The Tampa, Fla., location of Wise Recycling LLC, has announced an agreement to be the exclusive metal recycler for all Florida Tire Kingdom Service Centers.

Tire Kingdom is one of the largest tire and automotive service retailers in the Southeast, operating 150 stores. Wise will purchase aluminum auto parts, lead wheel weights, aluminum wheels, and automotive radiators from each Tire Kingdom retailer and will provide pick-up service.

“We feel there is a lot of synergy between the two companies – from geography to service commitment to overall entrepreneurial spirit,” says Jim Zaccario, Wise Tampa Area Business Manager. “We want to make recycling convenient and profitable for every store.”

Paul Wilkins of Tire Kingdom likes the environmental aspect of the new relationship. “Tire Kingdom is committed to doing the right thing for our environment, and aluminum recycling from a cost saving and recovery perspective makes sense for our customers today and tomorrow.”

Fluff and Cover

A growing number of states and landfills are recognizing the benefits of using automotive shredder residue (ASR) as daily cover material, a new study by the Recycling Research Foundation (RRF), Washington, finds.

The study, “Beneficial Use of Automotive Shredder Residue in Landfills,” reports that of the 47 states where beneficial use status of ASR (also known as “fluff”) was determined, 85% have approved or would consider approving its use as daily cover material in landfills.

According to the study, states that have not approved ASR for beneficial use often have misconceptions of its characteristics and lack recognition of the overall economic, social and regulatory benefits that can be gained from beneficial use of ASR in landfills.

Information found in the study, supplied by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries Inc. (ISRI), supports the conclusion that using ASR as daily cover material can be beneficial. The study found that:

  • ASR is uniformly a non-hazardous material in terms of waste characterization when sources of lead, cadmium and PCBs are minimized in the feedstock, which can be accomplished by employing standard industry quality controls on inbound scrap material.

  • ASR has properties that are compatible with the RCRA criteria for acceptable sanitary landfill daily cover materials. The experience of landfill operators has shown that ASR has earthen material properties that can effectively minimize scavenging rodents and birds, reduce fire hazard, minimize blowing litter and reduce odors.

  • Sanitary landfill operators currently using ASR are pleased with the way ASR performs as cover material, with several noting that, compared with soil, the relatively high water absorbency made ASR easier to handle in wet conditions.

  • ASR is compatible with blending or layering with other materials if a particular mixture of ASR is limited in quantity, or the characteristics of a particular mixture may influence its use as daily cover material in landfills under some state regulations or permit limits.

The 104-page report is available from ISRI at $250 per copy.
