DJJ Kentucky facility earns safety certification

Scrap company’s Newport, Kentucky, yard achieves SHARP certification; has gone 11 years without a lost-time injury.

The Newport, Kentucky, facility of River Metals Recycling (RMR), a subsidiary of the Cincinnati-based David J. Joseph Co. (DJJ), has received its third SHARP (Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program) certification award for “taking extraordinary measures to ensure the safety and health of all teammates.”

According to a DJJ press release, the award was presented to RMR by the Acting Secretary of the Kentucky Cabinet Mike Nemes. RMR Newport achieved its initial SHARP certification in December 2013 and is labeled by DJJ as the first recycling facility in Kentucky to earn SHARP status.

SHARP is described by DJJ as “one of the highest honors OSHA (the United States Occupational Safety and Health Administration) awards to small worksites that demonstrate an exemplary commitment to workplace safety and health.” RMR Newport has had no lost time injuries for 11 straight years, according to DJJ.

“At RMR, safety is our number one core value,” says RMR President Bob Eviston. “This award is a testament to RMR’s comprehensive safety process, including ongoing training and procedures to ensure the safety of all teammates, customers and suppliers.”

RMR, based in Crescent Springs, Kentucky, has 260 employees and nine locations in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. The Newport facility has 44 employees.

RMR is wholly owned by DJJ, which in turn is part of Charlotte, North Carolina-based steelmaker Nucor Corp.
