Generally, most entrepreneurs have a greater appetite for risk than employees do concerning the uncertainty and potential for financial loss or failure related to business decisions. However, companies that foster an entrepreneurial culture encourage their employees to take risks as well, believing that playing it safe is a form of risk itself.
According to The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, entrepreneurs also share other characteristics, like identifying as outsiders—they don’t feel the need to conform to corporate culture or limit themselves to “secure” jobs. They also are problem-solvers and inherently optimistic.
While entrepreneurs embrace risk, that doesn’t mean they are reckless. The risks they take are based on the risk-to-reward calculations they make. If they like the math, they move forward with an idea that could stop those who are more risk-adverse.
The entrepreneurs Recycling Today has featured over the years have made these calculations and taken risks, whether adding equipment or a processing location or expanding into a new service area, and Venture Metals, the subject of this issue’s cover story, is no different.

In addition to founding the company in 1986 with the acquisition of a Dallas recycling facility, Mike Uhrick took a risk by taking on a co-owner, Mark Chazanow, in 2011 and partnering with Chris Chong, the company’s chief marketing officer, to create an export and brokerage business.
The business partners also acquired other recycling businesses over the last decade, partnered with Mill Rock Capital and established a trading office and processing facility in South Korea.
Venture Metals encountered challenges throughout the years, which, true to the entrepreneurial spirit, Uhrick says were catalysts for growth and innovation.
By taking calculated risks, business owners can distinguish their companies from their competitors and capitalize on overlooked opportunities. Embracing risk also helps in creating a culture of innovation that leads to new services and processes that drive growth and profitability. Successful risk-taking is synonymous with business growth.
