NAID Briefing

NAID expands staff, gains the attention of the Internal Revenue Service.

Stars Align for NAID and the Industry

The number of NAID’s initiatives and programs is at an all-time high and there are a few exciting developments that demonstrate the association’s growing influence. These developments will prove to have long-term significance to our members and the industry.

NAID was recently sought out by the group within the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) that is working on destruction specifications for the agency’s electronic media. What originally attracted the group to NAID was the publicity surrounding our new Compliance Toolkit. Not surprisingly, the early confidential drafts of the new requirements contain a great deal of language lifted directly from the Toolkit. It remains to be seen what the final version of the IRS specifications will contain, but early indications are that there are other references to NAID that will mean a great deal to the organization and the industry.

NAID also has hired a management team, including a managing director to guide the association’s activities and growth in Europe. Not only does this mean that NAID’s global influence will continue to grow and that the association in Europe is preparing to stand on its own two feet, but it also means that NAID’s existing management team will be able to focus more of its attention on continuing to add benefits to U.S.-based members.

Lastly, NAID has hired a full-time director of communications. And, even though our efforts to date have led to extremely good exposure nationally and internationally, adding a person with proven experience in public relations and communications will increase that ability exponentially.

If I had to leave the industry with one message about the ability of NAID to improve the market for legitimate information destruction services, that message is, "You ain’t seen nothin’ yet."

Bob Johnson is the executive director of the National Association for Information Destruction. He can be reached at exedir@naidonline.org.
