The Lincoln, Nebraska, City Council has approved a three-year recycling education contract with Cason+Co Global of Lincoln at a cost of $617,522, according to a report in the Lincoln Journal Star. The city currently has a 22 percent recycling rate.
A state grant covers $225,000 of the contract’s cost, with the city’s landfill occupation tax providing the remainder.
The Lincoln Journal Star reports that the council approved the contract in a 6 to 1 vote and that its cost is $230,000 less than the amount first presented to the council.
A vote on the original contract in the amount of $850,000 was delayed when some council members and citizens questioned the amount as well as some of the contract provisions at an earlier public hearing, the Lincoln Journal Star reports.
Cason+Co Global will use a research-based process that encourages residents to change their behavior to recycle more, according to the newspaper.
