Recognizing the growth of the information and product destruction industry, ASTM International Committee E34 on Occupational Health and Safety has formed a new subcommittee to develop standards to serve the industry.
Subcommittee E34.25 on Mobile and Plant-Based Security Destruction Equipment Safety Requirements is seeking participants to assist with the development of standards for the equipment used in the industry.
Bob Johnson, executive director of the National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) and an E34.25 subcommittee member, says, because of the nature of the services provided, a number of health and safety issues are unique to the information destruction industry.
The subcommittee will begin by developing a minimum safety standard for the design, construction and operation of shredding equipment and facilities. According to a press release issued by ASTM, instructions, warnings and personal safety requirements will be specified in the proposed standard.
Additional information on the standard development process is available from NAID’s Johnson by phoning (602) 788-6243, ext. 201, or e-mailing rjohnson@naidonline.org.
