Harris American baler keeps materials moving in Florida

A two-ram baler with a precompression lid met the needs of Recycling Services of Florida.

Recycling Services of Florida (RSF), with five locations across the Gulf Coast and central regions of the state, relies on balers to process a variety of recyclable materials collected from a deep roster of municipal, commercial and institutional customers.

This summer, RSF worked closely with Harris American on the installation of a TR-1388-200 baler at the recycling firm’s facility in Clearwater, Florida.

The two-ram unit with a precompression lid quickly went into action helping RSF bale a steady stream of old corrugated containers, mixed paper, used beverage cans, polyethylene terephthalate and high-density polyethylene for recycling, as well as baling residue and some municipal solid waste for disposal.

RSF President George Ward says he has been working with Harris American and its predecessor companies for more than 40 years, so he turned to the Cordele, Georgia-based company when he was seeking a baler in Clearwater that could offer high productivity and the ability to bale materials with both high- and low-density traits.

The TR-1388-200 was installed in July and, according to Harris American Vice President of Sales Jeff Ham, is engineered to handle all types of recyclables.

“It offers unmatched versatility, making it an ideal solution for Recycling Services of Florida with its diverse baling needs,” Ham says.

The model’s precompression lid has been an especially attractive aspect of the new baler.

“The lid made this baler a solid winner with its ability to bale various grades and not have everything rely on the knife to shear, which might wear the machine down more quickly,” Ward says.

Ham also points to the precompression lid’s ability to reduce wear parts and maintenance costs as selling point of the TR-1388-200, as well as its versatility to handle many materials and the Harris American legacy of providing “unmatched reliability with decades of proven performance.”

RSF, with its fleet of 700 trucks serving a wide network of customers with abundant volumes of material, needed an efficient installation and training process in Clearwater, and Ward says Harris American accomplished that.

“The installation was very thorough, and the tech [installer] set up all the parameters by grade for us prior to departing,” he says. “[The training provider] stayed for a whole week and trained all of our pertinent employees on best practices and troubleshooting.”
