Sun Microsystems Announces Availability of StorageTek T10000
Sun Microsystems, Santa Clara, Calif., has announced the availability of its Sun StorageTek T10000 enterprise tape drive, which it describes as "the next-generation of StorageTek tape drives and ideal complement to Sun’s premier StorageTek automated tape libraries."
The T10000 tape drive has twice the capacity of earlier StorageTek enterprise drives and advanced data protection and security features, according to Sun.
"Our information life cycle management strategy is singularly focused on helping our customers manage exponential data growth while lowering costs and enhancing the efficiency of their overall storage operations," Nigel Dessau, vice president, tape business, Sun Microsystems, says.
According to a press release from Sun, its StorageTek T10000 enterprise tape drive "enhances storage efficiency to reduce costs, mitigates the risks associated with data protection and retention and reduces management complexity to help organizations realize the full value of their business information."
The StorageTek T10000 has a data throughput rate of 120 megabytes/second and a capacity of up to 500 gigabytes uncompressed. Sun says the T10000 tape drive delivers a 250 percent increase in density and 400 percent increase in throughput speeds over the earlier Sun StorageTek T9940B drive. The StorageTek T10000 tape drive also features Sun’s new, proprietary SafeGuide media-to-drive guiding system, which leverages a longer tape path and a tape leader and take-up reel design to mitigate the risk of data loss and corruption and to enhance overall reliability.

Intercon Solutions Updates Facility
Chicago Heights, Ill.-based electronics demanufacturer Intercon Solutions has received $325,000 in grant funds from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity.
The company received a $250,000 Recycling Expansion and Modernization (REM) Grant to finance the implementation of a new processing system that will increase productivity and operating efficiencies while also improving safety, according to a press release from Intercon Solutions.
An additional $75,000 Illinois Recycling Grant will fund a security and safety equipment upgrade. A portion of the funds will be used to produce educational material to promote secure and safe recycling practices in the state, according to Intercon.
"The best part about this opportunity is that our system will go automated…without replacing our men with machines," Timothy Osgood, Intercon Solutions director of corporate recycling, says. "In addition, enhancing our security will add another level of assurance to the recycling process."
Osgood says that eventually Intercon Solutions customers will be able to view the recycling of their electronics from their computer monitors.
The company says it hopes the processing improvements will allow it to increase profit margins and cut costs, while the surveillance system, security monitoring and safety training will allow Intercon Solutions to better secure its 250,000-square-foot facility. The plant will have key-card access for employees and continual video surveillance monitored by a security guard.
