Redemtech Releases Lock-IT Utility
Columbus, Ohio-based asset management services provider Redemtech has released Datasure Lock-IT 2.0, a security utility that locks the hard drives on IT assets to prevent unauthorized access during transit or storage. The utility works by encrypting system files.
"A significant number of security breaches occur as a result of lost or stolen computers," Robert Houghton, president of Redemtech, says. "Lock-IT allows organizations to close a gap in their security program by enabling fast, on-site data locking on assets being decommissioned or redeployed."
Lock-IT can be downloaded and installed by non-technical users in less than five minutes and takes 30 seconds to execute, according to Redemtech. It can also be configured as part of the system, providing on-demand locking security throughout an asset’s life span. Users can also configure numerous unlock options, including user-defined passwords and a corporate unlock key.
Lock-IT can boot from DOS, allowing data on defective drives to be secured until they can be transported to a facility for secure erasure, Redemtech says in a press release.
The utility works on any Windows-based computer, including desktops and servers. Once the initial options are configured, the software can be downloaded from the Redemtech Web site and distributed to end users through the Internet, e-mail, floppy disk, CD, USB drive, system image or network command.

TrueCycle Receives ISO Certification
Pasadena, Calif.-based electronics recycler trueCycle Inc. has received ISO 9001:2000 and 14001:2004 certifications, according to company founder and CEO Todd Hill.
ISO 9001:2000 certification means trueCycle has established and adheres to quality management standards in its business and customer relations, while ISO 14001:2004 certification means the company has established environmental management systems.
Hill says, "Electronics waste must be recognized as a special category, not simply because of the environmental impact of improper disposal, but also because e-waste posses greater opportunity for unauthorized access to personal or corporate information that may remain on hard drives and other electronics storage media, exposing corporations to risks associated with identity theft."
TrueCycle operates facilities in Placerville and Victorville, Calif., that provide asset management services, electronic scrap materials reclamation, recycling, volume reduction processing, environmental certification and equipment tracking services.
