NC RECYCLER FINDS DRYWALL MARKETS

A company based in Chatham County, North Carolina is marketing soil additive and spill absorption products made from recycled drywall (also known as wallboard and sheetrock). After directing a study that identified drywall scrap as a major component of the North Carolina construction waste stream, Don Evans founded Waste Reduction Products Corp. (WRPC) in an attempt to help create end markets for the gypsum-based material.

According to the North Carolina Recycling Business Assistance Center, the home gardening, lawn care, golf course maintenance, and spill absorption markets are all receptive to competitively-priced products made from secondary materials.

HERTZ EQUIPMENT SEEKS FRANCHISES

Hertz Equipment Rental Corporation (HERC), Park Ridge, N.J., will begin seeking franchises in target markets in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Canada as part of its ongoing strategy.

“During 1997, we opened 20 new HERC locations in the U.S.,” said Gerald Plescia, HERC president. “We will continue to open new corporate locations and we will continue to assess acquisition opportunities that make sense for us. However, we will begin to seek franchises in select markets with a strong construction base.”

“With the consolidation that we have witnessed in the equipment rental industry, we feel we offer prospective franchisees the advantages of being associated with a national company with a strong, recognizable brand,” adds Plescia.

Inventories at franchise locations will range from $1 million to $4 million. Franchisees will be able to acquire equipment from major manufacturers through a special equipment purchasing program set up by HERC.

So far in 1998, HERC has opened seven new U.S. branches and has acquired one of the largest equipment sales and rental companies in Canada.
