BioCor LLC, located in Concord, Calif., has announced that it has launched a new venture to purchase, aggregate and process post-consumer polylactic acid (PLA). The company cited broad and growing interest in the plastics markets for PLA as a reason for the venture.
PLA is a 100 percent plant-based bioplastic. According to a release, BioCor hopes to capitalize on the ease in which PLA can be converted back to its original feedstock for use in a variety of existing end markets.
The company notes that it will also collaborate on PLA recycling pilot projects, as well as work with federal, state, and municipal entities, non-governmental organizations, consumer groups and recycling organizations.
Mike Centers, BioCor’s executive director, says that the company already has been approached by several parties eager to sell post-industrial and post-consumer PLA and is in the process of assessing the initial supplies.
