Abitibi-Consolidated Launches Recycling Expansion

Abitibi-Consolidated Inc., Houston, has announced that its Paper Retriever program is expanding into seven additional U.S. markets, including Baltimore, Boston, Buffalo, N.Y., Cincinnati, Las Vegas, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pa.

The program will now operate in 23 metropolitan areas in the United States and Canada, according to a press release from Abitibi.

The paper collected in the expansion markets will go mostly to the company’s Thorold, Ontario and Snowflake, Ariz., mills, both of which manufacture newsprint using 100 percent recycled fiber.

The community-based program places green and yellow bins in schools and other non-profit organizations to encourage the community to bring newspapers, magazines and other paper in for recycling. 

The Paper Retriever program is part of Abitib-Consolidated's recycling program. Abitibi is the world's largest producer of newsprint.
