Members of Local 4-1331 of the Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy
Workers International Union (PACE) in Campti, La., voted by an overwhelming
margin Feb. 2 to accept Willamette Industries' offer to provide a supplemental
401(k) plan to hourly workers at the company's Red River Mill. A strike was set
to occur yesterday in Campti if the offer was turned down last Friday.
``This is a victory for all of the unions, since it is the first time a union at Willamette has achieved a supplemental 401(k) plan with a company matching provision,'' said PACE Region Six International representative David Broussard, who headed the contract negotiations for the 270 union workers.
The Campti mill is one of the largest OCC consuming mills in the Southwest. There was concern that if the union went on strike, as it threatened, another end market for OCC would be eliminated.
