Weyerhaeuser, which settled a strike late last week, announced plans to lay off 235 of the workers at the mills in Washington and Oregon. The company attributed the move to slowing demand for its finished products.
Paper workers at Weyerhaeuser’s mills in Longview and Cosmopolis, Wash.; and Springfield and North Bend, Ore., went on strike early last month. A total of 1,400 paper workers were on strike.
Weyerhaeuser will take the cuts at its mills in Longview and Springfield. The company noted that weekly box shipments have declined 7 percent and paper shipments have dropped 12 percent.
