Waste Management Inc.'s wholly-owned subsidiary, Canadian Waste Services Inc., has been awarded a solid waste contract by the city of Toronto. The city selected Rail Cycle North, a consortium with Canadian Waste Services, Miller Waste Systems, Canadian National Railroad, Ontario Northland Railroad and Notre Development, to handle most of the city's solid waste disposal needs for 20 years. The contract begins Jan. 1, 2003.
Canadian Waste Services anticipates transporting and disposing of an average of 1.3 million tons per year of municipal solid waste during the contract. In addition to Toronto, the regions of Peel, Durham and York are anticipated to be involved.
