The operations being divested in this transaction include UK Waste, one of the largest integrated waste management companies in the United Kingdom. UK Waste provides recycling and solid waste collection, transfer and disposal services in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The sale stems from Waste Management's strategy to re-focus the company on its North American waste operations.
Waste Management subsidiaries are in discussions with other parties regarding the divestiture of certain other international businesses, as well as certain non-core and non-integrated solid waste assets in North America. The company intends to use the proceeds of these divestitures to reduce debt and to make selective tuck-in acquisitions of solid waste businesses in North America.
