Lonnie C. Poole, Jr., chairman and CEO of Waste Industries, Inc., stated, ``During the quarter, we acquired landfills near existing collection markets which will initially allow us to internalize 1,000 - 1,500 tons per day. The Sampson County site in Eastern NC came about through an asset swap with Allied Waste Industries, Inc. and is situated within 100 miles of 16 collection operations and 9 transfer stations operated by Waste Industries. We also acquired and completed development of a greenfield site in Atlanta which opened for business in June. Existing collection operations in Alpharetta and Lilburn will divert some of their waste flow to this new Safeguard site. I am very pleased that transfer and disposal revenue grew 55% in one year.''
