Smurfit-Stone announced plans to close its York, Pa., containerboard mill. The facility, idled since Feb. 15, is capable of producing 130,000 tons of corrugated medium a year.
Smurfit-Stone also announced plans to take downtime to remove about 180,000 tons of finished product during the second quarter.
Ray Curran, president and CEO of Smurfit-Stone, said, "We reviewed our system in light of market requirements and have decided we can meet our internal demand as well as the needs of our customers without the York facility. We continue to review our containerboard operations as we evaluate market needs."
