The Mead Corp. announced plans to take between 40,000 and 50,000 tons of downtime during the fourth quarter at its mill in Stevenson, Ala. Downtime will start the week of Oct. 23. The company's goals are to reduce production during the quarter to bring inventory levels in line with current business conditions. Following this planned downtime, Mead will continue to manage inventory levels consistent with market demand.
The Stevenson mill has two paper machines with a combined annual capacity of 850,000 tons. Production will be curtailed by shutting down one of the machines at a time and alternating their use during the quarter.
