International Paper and Motorola, Inc. signed a memorandum of understanding in anticipation of manufacturing ``smart packages.'' These will contain smart tags that, when embedded into packaging, will have the ability to enable manufacturers, distributors and retailers to ``talk to'' their products throughout the supply chain, enhancing inventory control and security and helping to slash billions of dollars in losses annually from theft and counterfeiting.
Through the arrangement, International Paper intends to become the first global producer of packaging products to adopt Motorola's new BiStatix technology for retail, pharmaceutical and food services customers. Near-term field applications include supply chain management and anti-counterfeiting. A unique identifier placed in high-value consumer goods, such as pharmaceutical products, perfumes, and cigarettes, can aid in defending against gray market theft and counterfeiting.
