Graphic Packaging International Corp., Golden, Co., reports that, to date, it has been unable to sell its Kalamazoo, Mich., recycled board mill due to market conditions, including a recent squeeze on margins following increased recovered paper prices and increased energy costs. The mill was acquired in August 1999 as part of the packaging assets purchased from Fort James Corp.
According to GPI, the Kalamazoo mill is the most modern and lowest-cost recycled board mill in North America, and "generally operates at full capacity and continues to generate good cash flow even at today's high fiber costs." Currently, 65 percent of its output is captive to Graphic Packaging carton plants; this amount is expected to increase within the next 12 months.
