A
report by the California Integrated Waste Management Board finds that more
companies are printing on recycled newsprint in the state, and many are
voluntarily using more recycled-content stock in their operations than required
by the state.
According
to the CIWMB, newsprint consumers used 1.1 million metric tons of
recycled-content newsprint in 1999, roughly 64 percent of all the newsprint
used in the state.
According
to Linda Moulton-Patterson, “Over the past three years, the use of
recycled-content newsprint in California has jumped 36 percent.”
In
1999, 86 percent of companies filing with the Waste Board certified using at
least 40 percent recycled-content newsprint, compared to 85 percent in 1998, 83
percent in 1997 and 75 percent in 1996.
