American Beverage, Washington, has awarded West Haven, Connecticut, a $256,000 grant through The Recycling Partnership, also based in Washington, which will fund larger curbside recycling carts for 16,000 households. The grant includes a robust education and outreach campaign to reduce contamination of recyclables.
"Through Every Bottle Back, we are investing in communities like West Haven that are committed to improving recycling," American Beverage President and CEO Kevin Keane says. “This grant helps West Haven cross the finish line to a modernized system that collects more recyclables, like our bottles and cans, to be remade as intended.”
The new 65-gallon carts will support the city’s migration to semiautomated and automated collections with weekly service. Through these upgrades, this investment is expected to yield more than 11 million new pounds of recyclables over 10 years. This includes nearly 450,000 pounds of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and more than 149,000 pounds of aluminum.
This investment is part of 65 initial projects that the leading members of the beverage industry, The Coca-Cola Co., Keurig Dr Pepper and PepsiCo., and its sustainability partners have committed to fund through Every Bottle Back. The beverage industry has committed $38.9 million in funding nationwide. These investments will yield an estimated 914 million new pounds of recycled PET and 87 million new pounds of recycled aluminum over the next decade.
