Trash-To-Treasure: Turning Nonrecycled Waste Into Low-Carbon Fuel
Typically, MRFs landfill 5-15 percent of what they collect, much of it energy-rich plastic and paper. The Webber Energy Group at the University of Texas-Austin used this residue, along with post-industrial waste, to create solid recovery fuel (SRF) pellets. The net result is that the SRF pellets created energy, reduced carbon emissions and reduced coal use in a cement kiln.
