U.K.-based electronics recycling company also forms trading subsidiary in Jebel Ali, Dubai, UAE.
Sims Recycling Solutions (SRS)
, a division of the global recycling firm Sims Metal Management Ltd., has formed a trading subsidiary and opened its first facility in Jebel Ali, Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The decision follows a four-year evaluation of the market, according to SRS. The company says that the research was done to ensure that the market in the Middle East was ready for IT asset recovery and electronics recycling services.
With the opening of the plant, SRS says Jebel Ali now hosts the Middle East region’s first and only fully compliant waste electrical and electronics recycling and end-of-life asset management facility operating to globally recognized standards.
The subsidiary of SMM Ltd. will be known as Sims Recycling Solutions FZE. According to SMM, the new division will offer large corporations, logistics companies and government departments a secure facility to recycle, reuse and remarket assets from the IT and Telecom sectors. A spokesman for SRS says that the facility will initially be an IT asset recovery operation with secure data wiping. It also will handle other electronic scrap and where equipment can't be reused, it will be hand dismantled and bulked up for sale or onward shipping to one of SRS's mechanical processing facilities where full recycling will take place.
Philip Hughes, director of SRS FZE, says, “Over the past years there has been a growing awareness in the GCC Region of the need for a better understanding of ‘Green Solutions.’” For the general public this has manifested itself as a growing awareness of the need to “recycle domestic waste products, especially high value items such as IT and electronics,” he adds.
